Ok, so while UK games developers– and Train2Game students – are disappointed that the proposed tax breaks have been scrapped, there is still plenty to be pleased about this country’s video games industry.
Train2Game have seen a report by TIGA entitled ‘The UK’s Video Gaming Industry’ which demonstrates that Games Development contributes millions to the country’s economy.
According to the report, the UK games industry sustains 10,000 highly skilled creative jobs across 280 companies. These employees will of course include Games Developers, Games Designers and Games Artists, which Train2Game students aspire to soon join.
Despite the incentives for developers in other parts of the world, the UK games industry remains strong. A recent report ranking the worlds top 100 most successful studios, showed that over 20% of these are in the UK. This includes huge developers including Rockstar North, Rocksteady Studios and Sports Interactive, who created Grand Theft Auto IV, Batman: Arkham Asylum and the Football Manager series respectively.
Of course, the UK games industry isa multimillion-pound business with a turnover of £625 million, and in 2008 it directly contributed to £386 million to the UK economy. This is helped along by over 60% of the UK population playing video games in one form or another.
That’s the promising prospect for Train2Game students – be they playing games on an iPhone 4G, a console, or a PC – there is an audience out there waiting to buy games. Potentially waiting to buy your games.
